2010 Boys Tennis

We played well against Alexandria in the scrimmage on Saturday.  We won 15 matches and lost 5 and had 1 tie.  Alexandria played well also.  Besides having to wait out the rain delay, it was a good day of tennis that helped us see how our hard work is paying off.  We need to continue to improve through the season to be competitive with the tougher teams on our schedule.  If our players keep positive and work hard, we will show improvement.

On Monday, we opened the season by traveling to Bluffton.  Our players quickly established the fact that they were there to compete and to open the season on a good, strong note.  Dalton and Austin gave us a quick 2-0 lead while Abram, Collin/Payton, and Scott/Ryan followed their winning ways to give us a 5-0 win.

The JV team won 4-2 with Landon, Andy, Jacob, and Clay winning their matches.

We defeated Adams Central on Tuesday 4-1 at IWU.  Austin and Dalton gave us a 2-0 lead with quick victories.  Collin/Payton kicked it up a notch in the second set to give us the team win.  Abram played pretty well in his 3-set win, avenging his loss last year to Nathan Barger.  Landon/Scott gained some experience playing varsity doubles.  It was a good win against a nice team.

The JV Team lost 7-2 against A.C. with Andy/Colton and Jeff/Clay winning their doubles matches.

We lost to Kokomo on Thursday in a very close match.  After Kokomo went up 2-0 by defeating Austin and Landon/Ryan, Abram and Dalton won their matches to tie the score at 2-2.  #1 Doubles dropped 2 chance to take it to a 3rd set and lost 6-4, 7-5 giving us our first loss of the season.  This match will serve to motivate us moving forward with our season.

The JV Team lost 7-3.  Gabriel won both of his matches while Jeff/Clay won a doubles match.

We dropped another close match on Tuesday, losing to Western 3-2.  Western is a strong team and is now 3-0 on the season.  Abram and Dalton each won their singles matches.  Austin and both doubles (Collin/Payton and Ryan/Scott) lost close matches.  Our inexperience is preventing us from having the great confidence we need to have.  We will definitely work harder to help gain more consistency and confidence.  The JV Team lost 7-0.

On Thursday, we were defeated by Northwestern 3-2.  With Abram and Austin winning their matches and Collin/Payton and Ryan/Scott losing, the team score was 2-2 with Dalton still on the court late in the first set.  Dalton lost the 1st set tie-break 7-5 and then dropped the second set.  Another close match, another close loss.  Northwestern played well.  The JV Team tied 2-2.  Jacob May won his match in a tie-break and Gabriel/Clay won their match.  We will have 2 conference matches this week.

On Monday, we practiced on the new courts for the first time…We are pretty excited to finally be at home this season.  The courts are pretty cool looking.  We hope to break-them-in in a winning fashion.  Our first home match on the new courts will be September 7th at 5:00PM. Come by and see how hard the team is playing!

On Wednesday, we traveled to Madison Grant to play our first CIC match of the season.  Dalton and Austin cruised to victories in their matches to give us a 2-0 lead in the match.  Collin/Payton and Ryan/Scott fought to the finish but came up short to make the team score tied 2-2.  The match was down to Abram and Conner Hunt with both playing well and holding serve.  Abram captured the 2nd set 6-4 giving the Indians the team win.  Whew! Another close match…this time OLEMISS WINS!

The JV Team also was tied 2-2 with the last match being played.  Jacob and Colton won their singles matches while Andy and Gabriel lost very close matches.  Jeff/Clay split sets and played a super tie-break but came up short.

On Thursday, we played our second CIC match of the season at Blackford.  The Singles players(Abram, Dalton, and Austin) proved to be too strong for Blackford’s singles players.  Together the 3 players gave up a total of 4 games while winning 36.  Collin/Payton are still trying to get comfortable and consistent while Scott/Ryan gave one of their strongest performances of the year but fell short in a tight 3-set match.

The JV Team lost 3-2.  Winners were Jacob May and Jeff Slater.

On Saturday, We traveled to Fort Wayne to compete in the FW Carroll Invitational.  Six of the eight teams in the tourney were ranked in the top 25 teams in the state.  In the first round, we played #4 Plainfield and lost 5-0.  Our kids fought hard and played pretty well in the defeat.  In the second round, we played #16 Homestead.  We were competitive on four of the five courts.  Abram lost in a 3rd set tie-break to a 2009 All-State 1st team player.  Collin/Payton frustrated a good doubles team in their win and Austin beat a player who had very similar strengths..  Dalton played one of his best sets of tennis in his 1st set.  In the 3rd round, we defeated Huntington North 5-0.  Our players did a great job fighting through fatigue to control this match.

The JV players were able to get some matches against some nice players during the day.  Jeff Slater and Clay Ailes each won a singles match.

On Tuesday, we played the 1st match on the new courts!  Taylor came into the match 5-1 on the season.  Scott/Ryan gave us an early lead with a 6-0,6-0 win.  Austin and then Abram followed soon after with victories to secure the team win.  Dalton was starting to adjust to his opponent and the wind but came up short.  Collin/Payton had little hope in their 3rd set loss.  The team wins 3-2.  Tomorrow we will play more aggressively and confidently.

The JV Team won 3-2.  Jacob May, Gabriel Martins, and Andy/Colton won their matches.

On Wednesday, we hosted Maconaquah(7-1).  We played with a lot of confidence and concentration in setting the tone early for this match.  Payton/Collin played well and kept the pressure on the entire match in their 6-1,6-0 win.  Austin played very aggressively in his win.  Scott/Ryan finished strongly in both sets to clinch the team victory.  Abram then came off of his court a 6-0,6-0 winner while Dalton was starting his second set after winning the first set in a tie-break.  Dalton had to play another undefeated #2singles player and fought to the end in his 3-set defeat.  It was a great day for the Olemiss Tennis Program.  Coach Fratus and I were pleased with the team’s effort!

The JV Team lost 4-1 even though they played hard.  Colton Shipley was the lone winner.

On Saturday, we played Marion(9-0) at 4:15PM…we arrived at our courts at 8:15AM to prepeare for this match….after several delays, we finally were able to play.  Marion beat us 4-1. The effort was there but the execution was not.  We will hope this was due to it being a long, drawn out day.  We will keep working to be prepared at sectional time so we can be more competitive as a team.  Dalton battled against a strong player the entire match but dropped a 2nd set tie-break.  Austin moved his opponent around a lot during his win.

The JV Team lost 4-1.  Andy/Colton won their doubles match.

On Monday, we hosted Alexandria for our 3rd match on the new courts and our 3rd conference match this season.  We played well and confidently in the 5-0 win over the Tigers.  It was a nice win for the team!

The JV Team won 4-2.  Winners were Jacob, Andy, Gabriel, and Colton.

Over the weekend, we traveled to the Louisville Area to play in the Jeffersonville tournament.  We did not get off to a good start by going 0-5 on Friday night.  We played better on Saturday but were 4-6 for the day against the strong competition.  This experience will prove to be valuable to us during the state tourney.  The players represented Mississinewa very well.  Coach Fratus and I feel fortunate to coach such good kids!

On Monday, we played our 4th match on our new courts.  We must like them a lot because we are now 4-0 on them.  Even though our players were still a little tired from the trip, we dominated Elwood, for the most part, bringing us just one win from earning a CIC championship.  Abram and Dalton did not give up a single game in their win.  Austin took a little longer than he had hoped in his victory.  Collin/Payton played with a lot of confidence in their 6-1, 6-0 win and Scott/Ryan matched #1Doubles energy, confidence, and score in their win.

The JV Team tied 1-1.  Jeff Slater won his match.

On Thursday, we played at Frankton for our last conference match.  We did a good job handling the wind and our opponents.  After Austin gave us a 1-0 lead, Collin/Payton and Abram followed soon after, giving us the team victory.  Dalton and Scott/Ryan finished their matches to enjoy the celebration.  Coach Fratus and I were pleased to see these players earn this title!

The JV Team won 5-1.  All 5 singles players won their matches…Landon, Jacob, Andy, Colton, and Jeff.

We finished 3rd in the Lebanon Tourney on Saturday.  We lost to Perry Meridian 5-0.  We were very competitive on 4 courts.  Jeff Slater won his singles match in the JV Team’s 6-1 loss.  In the second round, we defeated Lebanon 3-2 in a great match.  Abram and Austin won their singles matches.  Collin/Payton won their doubles match, playing some of their best tennis of the season.  The JV Team lost to Lebanon 7-1.  Jacob May / Andy Kirby won their doubles match.

We played on the Ball State University Varsity Courts against Muncie Burris on Monday night.  Burris pushed us to play at a higher level in order to win.  Everyone picked up their play and gave great effort in the team’s 5-0 win.  It was another match that will help prepare us for the state tourney.   Our players are playing hard every match.  Abram played one of his stronger matches.  Collin/Payton had another great day (they have played very well for about 5 straight matches now).  Dalton took control in his tie-break and finished at the same time as #1D.  Austin, with a great effort and adjustments, turned around a first-set loss to capture a 3-set victory.  Scott/Ryan took control of their match after dropping the 1st set to win decisively.

The JV Team won their last match of the season 5-3.  Landon and Gabriel won singles matches while Andy/Jacob(twice) and Colton/Jeff won their doubles matches.

On Wednesday, we defeated Jay County in the 1st round of the Sectional Tournament.  We almost made it a very quick night.  Abram and Austin came finished almost at the same time with identical 6-0, 6-0 scores.  Collin/Payton secured the team victory with their 6-0, 6-1 win.  Dalton soon followed but Scott/Ryan needed a 3rd set to start their engines…they did get it together and won the match giving us a 5-0 win.  Our players looked a little tired overall but this next challenge should help us gain some extra energy.

On Thursday, we played Madison Grant in the 2nd round of the Sectional Tourney.  Four weeks ago, we defeated MG 3-2.  This time it was by the score of 4-1 with our Collin/Payton dropping a 3rd set 6-4 in an exciting match.  Dalton played for 18 minutes before coming off of the courts a 6-0, 6-0 winner.  Austin and Abram came off fairly soon clinching the team win.  Scott/Ryan captured the second set in a tie-break, giving the team a 4-0 lead.  Early in the mach, MG felt how much we improved over the past four weeks...we crushed any hope the Argyles had in any upsets.  We have become a good team!

On Friday, we played #25 Marion for the Championship of the Sectional Tourney.  We fought hard but came up short 4-1.  Austin gave us our only point and Dalton just came up short, dropping the 3rd set 7-5.  In order to beat Marion, we need to play our best at each position.  We played well, but have played better at almost every position sometime during the season.  This team has done a fantastic job this year…we will continue to prepare to compete with the best in the state.  The Seniors are leaving with four CIC Titles!
