Abram Fleming – All-State 1st Team

Abram, Austin Branock, Payton Scott, Scott Atkins – Academic All-State HM

 ==========================================================

  Our first week of practice went well.  Our number of players on the roster is down again this year.  We have only 11 players on the team this season but 6 of those players have at least one varsity letter.  The players are working hard during practice.  Our Seniors (Abram, Austin, Payton, and Scott) will help lead this team….it should be another exciting year of competitive tennis!

==========================================================

  On Monday, we traveled to Bluffton for our first match of the season.  Three positions (Austin, JacobM, Colton/JacobK) did not give up a single game.  Abram, after being down 2-1, won the next 11 games to win 6-2, 6-0.  Scott/Payton split tie-breaks and then won 6-2 in the 3rd set.  A 5-0 win is a good way to start the season.

  The JV Team lost 4-1.  Griffin won his singles match

  On Tuesday, we hosted Adams Central.  The match was extremely close, even though the final score was 5-0.  Three of the courts went into 3rd sets.  Austin again was the first finished, winning 6-1, 6-1.  Colton/JacobM won their second set 6-4 to give us a 2-0 lead.  Scott/Payton won 6-3 in the third set, Abram won 6-4 in the 3rd set, and JacobK won 6-1 in the 3rd set to complete the sweep.  The JV team lost 5-0.  Griffin played won of his best matches of his high school career while falling in a 3rd set tie-break.

  On Thursday, we were rained-out against Kokomo.

==========================================================

  On Monday, Kokomo brought their team over to make up the rain-out from last week.  Our players got off to a strong start with 4 positions capturing the first set.  After Scott/Payton dropped their match to a strong doubles team, Abram finished his match by winning 6-0, 6-0.  Jacob May soon gave us a 2-1 team lead with his 6-2, 6-1 victory.  At that time Colton/JacobK and Austin were both up 4-3 in the second set, leaving a small chance for Kokomo to come back.  Colton/Jacob won their last 2 games and Austin won 6-4.  It was a nice win over a good team.  We added Kokomo to our schedule 4 years ago and have come close in our first three attempts but fell short each time.

  The JV Team lost 2-0 and was shortened by rain.

  On Tuesday, we hosted Western.  Western played a junior at #1 Singles along with 6 seniors (Kokomo did the same).  With 10 seniors playing varsity, the level of play is pretty strong.  JacobM and Scott/Payton split sets. Scott/Payton dropped a 7-5 3rd set to give Western their lone point.  The win moves our record to 4-0.

  The JV team won 3-2.  Alex won in a 3rd set tie-break. Griffin won in straight sets and Alex/Griffin won at #1 Doubles.

  On Thursday, we hosted Northwestern.  Abram and JacobM made quick work of their opponents while winning in record time.  Austin soon followed suit.  The singles players did not give up a game.  Payton/Scott and Colton/JacobK won in straight sets to complete the sweep of varsity courts.  We are now 5-0 on the season.

  Alex/JacobC dropped a close match in a second set tie-break at JV.

==========================================================

  On Tuesday, we traveled to Marion to compete against the state-ranked, undefeated team.  We needed to play our best tennis to date in order to defeat the Giants.  We came up a little short, losing 3-2.  Wustin was a little under the weather and JacobMay fell and hurt his arm early in the match.  Abram and Colton/JacobK won in straight sets.

  The JV team lost 4-1 as Alex won his singles match 8-7 (9-7).

  On Wednesday, we played at Madison Grant, where we won our first conference match of the season, 4-1.  Abram lost to Conner Hunt in three sets, to stop his winning streak at 6.  Colton/Jacob Kirby are still undefeated on the season.

  Alex, griffin, and Jacob won their singles matches while Alex/Griffin won their doubles match to give the jv team its 4-0 win.

  On Thursday, we traveled to Blackford to play our 2nd conference match.  Four of the 5 positions won 6-0, 6-0.  Blackford’s #1 doubles team played well in their defeat of Scott/Payton in three sets.

  Alex/Griffin won at #1 Doubles for the JV team while Jacob Catey won his second consecutive match.

  On Saturday, we played in the FW Carroll Invitational.  For our first match, we were paired against #24 Indianapolis Cathedral.  We fought hard at every position even though we dropped the match by a 4-1 score.  Four of the five matches saw a set of 6-4 or 7-5.  Jacob May was the lone winner.  During the second match, we defeated Plainfield 4-1.  We were a little tired from the first match but everyone pushed themselves to compete well.  Our third match was rained out.  We will play Homestead later in the season.

  Alex went 2-1 on the day, beating Delta in singles, beating FW Carroll in doubles(with Griffin), and losing to Plainfield in singles.

  Griffin went 1-1 on the day, beating FW Carroll in doubles(with Alex) and losing to Plainfield.

  Jacob Catey went 0-2 on the day, losing to FW Carroll twice in singles.

  On Tuesday, we hosted a good Kokomo Taylor team.  Everyone did a good job not allowing our opponents to get a set.  Scott/Payton were first off the courts with their 6-1, 6-1 victory.  It seems like they are either playing 2 tightly-played sets or playing 3 sets each match…it was nice to see them take control of the match and keep the pressure on until the end.  Abram was next off with his 6-1, 6-2 win over the player who defeated Conner Hunt last week (Conner defeated Abram last week).  Colton/Jacob came back from a 5-2 1st set deficit to win 11 of the next 15 games in their win.  Jacob May and Austin completed the sweep with their wins.

  Alex/Griffin continue to show improvement and looked good in their 4-0, 4-1 win.

On Wednesday, we hosted Homestead.  We beat them for the 2nd straight season.  It is always nice to compete with the teams that have such tradition.

On Monday, we played our 3rd conference match.  We had a home match vs Alexandria.  We played well and won 5-0.

The players did another fantastic job during our fund-raiser.  These are the events that make me proud of our team.  They are not afraid to chip in and help and there is never complaining.

On Monday, we hosted Elwood for our Senior Honor Night.  The Seniors (Abram, Austin, Scott, Payton) displayed their skills in their quick and decisive victories!  The team won 5-0 to remain undefeated in the conference.

  Alex won his jv match 4-1, 4-1.

On Wednesday, we traveled to Frankton to play our last conference match (against our toughest conference opponent).  Our Seniors did a great job leading the way by giving up a total of 2 games combined. Abram won 6-0, 6-0; Scott/Payton won 6-0, 6-0; and Austin won 6-0, 6-2.  This gave secured the team championship.  Jacob May fought through a 2nd set tie-break to win and Colton/JacobK dominated in the 3rd set to clinch the sweep of all varsity positions.  The Indians won their 6th straight CIC Title!

  Alex/Griffin won #1Doubles position during the JV match.

On Saturday, we captured 1st place in the Lebanon Tourney!  Since KV dropped out of the tourney, each team played each other.  Since each team had 1 win and 1 loss, the champion was determined by the team who won the most 2-set matches.  We had 3 while the other two teams had 2.  The Indians were awarded 1st place and the tourney trophy.  Scott/Payton and Colton/Jacob were 2-0 on the day, while Abram was 1-1.

On Monday night, we played on the Ball State University Courts vs Muncie Burris.  We played well in the 4-1 victory.  Abram, Austin, and Jacob swept through Owls’ singles players.  Colton/Jacob won their match while Payton/Scott extended their match into a third set tie-break by winning the second set in a regular tie-break.  We finish the regular season with a 16-3 record.

  The JV team finished their season with a 5-0 loss.  Alex, Griffin, and JacobC all played with great effort in the defeat.

On Thursday, we played Madison Grant in the opening round of the state tournament.  Before we knew it, we were up 4-0 in the team score and Abram and Conner Hunt were beginning their 2nd set.  Abram avenged an earlier loss to Conner by winning 6-3, 6-2 to make the final score Mississinewa 5 Madison Grant 0.

On Saturday, we played Marion in the Sectional Finals.  Payton/Scott lost 6-4, 6-1….Abram won 6-1, 7-5 ….Colton/JacobK won 6-2, 6-3….Auston lost 7-5, 6-3…..At that time, it was 2-2 down to Jacob May who split sets.  The sectional would be determined by the 3rd set of the #3 Singles match.  Jacob May is the perfect player to have in this situation.  He played the Jacob May Way and won the match, giving the team the Sectional Crown!
