2014 Boys Tennis
We are very, very young and inexperienced this year. Only 2 players with varsity experience return to the team. Of the eleven players, ten are freshmen or sophomores. They are working to become more consistent so it has been fun for the coaching staff. We are excited to see what type of players we can develop.
Our scrimmage at Lapel went well. They are such a strong team! Our players did what we expected as far as giving great effort. We were pleased with how our players competed. It was a good starting point. We must still keep moving forward in order to be successful.
On Thursday, we travelled to Lapel to scrimmage a pretty strong team. Lapel will be one of the toughest teams in our district. The coaches were pleased with the effort the players gave. No one backed down from the challenges they were faced with. If we play with the same level of concentration during the season, we should show much improvement each night.
On Monday, we traveled to Bluffton to open our 2014 fall season against an experienced team. Bluffton returned 6 full-time varsity players and 1 part-time varsity player from last year’s team. Our players did not back down from the challenge. The doubles players fought hard but dropped their matches. Two hours into the match, we were down 2-0 while the 3 singles players were all moving into 3rd sets. We needed to win all 3 matches to win as a team so we still had a chance. Jerod May won his 3rd set 6-2, Isaac won his 3rd set 6-1. Just at that time, Paxton was tied 5-5…soon after, he won 7-5 in the 3rd to seal the victory for the team!
The JV team lost 4-0.
On Tuesday, we hosted Adams Central. We were about half way through the match when the rain hit and suspended play. The score is fairly close. We have won 1 set and Adams Central has won 2 sets. The other courts are near the end of their first sets. We do not have a make-up date yet.
On Thursday, we hosted Kokomo. After Jerod and Isaac won their matches the team score was tied at 2 with Paxton trying to secure the second set and the team match. Paxton won the last 4 games of the match to seal the victory.
The JV team lost 4-0 against a pretty strong JV squad.
On Tuesday, we hosted Western in another long battle. We lost 4-1 while dropping two 3-set matches. Paxton was the lone winner. Isaac and Jerod both extended play to 3 sets before dropping the third set.
The JV team lost 5-0.
On Thursday, we hosted Northwestern. It has been nice to avoid too much travelling so far this season. The players bounced back pretty well from Tuesday’s close loss to Western. We were pretty consistent with our effort and hitting tonight. Jerod, Isaac, and Paxton gave up 3 games total in their dominance at singles. Conner/Breyton won their 2D match. Griffin/Dalton played a very exciting match against a nice doubles team.
The JV Team won their first match of the season 4-2. Seth Graves and Matthias both won their singles matches and Brandon/Seth and Matthias/Clayton won their doubles matches.
On Tuesday, we played at Marion. After the first hour, we had lost the first set on all 5 courts…on two of the courts, we lost 6-0 and on 2 of the courts we lost 6-1….it was not pretty. During the second set, we started playing a little better. On four of the five courts, we improved our scores in the second set. Paxton won in 3 sets to remain unbeaten on the season!
The jv team got off to a 2-1 lead with wins from Conner/Seth and Greg. We had 2 chances at tie-breaks that ended up going against us…we lost the match 3-2
On Wednesday, we traveled to Madison Grant to start our CIC matches. We needed to get an early lead in the quest for the CIC championship. For the second straight night, we didn’t get off to a great start. We dropped 3 of the 5 first sets on the varsity courts. But for the second straight night, we improved our play and won more games in the second sets. With the match tied 2-2, Paxton was faced with another 3 set match to decide the final team point. Paxton fought from being down 4-3 in the third to win the final 3 games and sealed the team victory. What a battle! Jerod and Isaac won their singles matches.
The jv team lost 4-2. Winners were Brandon Herring/Seth Graves and Greg Michael/Matthias Briz.
On Thursday, we played our second CIC match when we traveled to Blackford. It was nice to have everyone win on both varsity and jv teams. Isaac and Paxton each won without giving up a single game. Both doubles teams only gave up 1 game. Jerod won 6-2, 6-1. The win takes us to 2-0 in the CIC.
The jv team won 4-0. Winners were Greg, Matthias, and Clayton at singles and Dalton/Seth at doubles.
On Saturday, we played in the FW Carroll Tournament. In the first round, we lost to #12 FW Carroll 4-1. Jerod played a great match in his win. In the second round, we lost to Plainfield 3-2 in a close match at all positions. Isaac and Paxton won their singles matches. In the third round, we lost to Concord 4-1. Jerod was our lone winner. It was a good day of tennis playing against some nice competition. We should benefit from participating in this tournament.
On Tuesday, we hosted Northeastern instead of playing Kokomo Taylor. Northeastern played in the state finals last year as a team. They are in a rebuilding year but have one of the best players in the state at #1S. It was a good experience playing this team. We ended in a 3-3 tie with winning 2S, 3S, and 1D and losing 1S, 2D, and 3D. All 3 doubles matches were competitive. Griffin/Brandon hung on to their lead in both sets to gain the victory.
On Tuesday, we hosted Alexandria. We were rained out on Monday so we played on Tuesday. It was a close match but we did not have as much fight as Alexandria in the 3-2 loss. We will now need some help from other CIC teams to gain the CIC title back. The doubles dropped close battles. Paxton could not stop his opponent’s comeback. Jerod won in straight sets. Isaac won a marathon match by overturning 7 match points in his 3hours and 20 minutes match.
The JV lost 3-2.
On Friday, we completed our match with Adams Central. We were half-way finished when the rain hit a month ago. The match seemed to continue in the same manner as it started. Jerod, Isaac, and Paxton won their second sets to give us a 3-2 win.
On Saturday, we played in the Homestead Invitational, where we finished 5th of 8 teams. It was great competition for our players. Jerod May went 2-1 on the day, defeating Bishop Dwenger and #14 Homestead. Isaac Torres defeated Concordia, Paxton Sample defeated Northridge, and Breyton/Dalton defeated Concordia.
On Monday, we hosted Elwood for our last home match of the season. We honored Griffin prior to his last home match of his career. We are so pleased to have witnessed the transformation of a young, shy lad to a great leader of our team. We appreciate all that he has done for our program. The three singles players, Jerod, Issac, and Paxton, won in straight sets to give us the team victory.
The JV team won 5-0. Matthias and Clayton won twice…teaming at doubles and then each winning a singles match. Greg also won a singles match and Seth/Breyton won their doubles match.
On Wednesday, we traveled to Frankton to play our last conference match against the defending champions. It was a tough battle. Frankton got off to an early lead with their win at #1D. Paxton, at 3S, tied it up with his win. Brandon and Conner won two tie-breaks to give the Indians a 2-1 lead. At this time, both 1S and 2S were moving into 3rd sets. Frankton captured 2S with a 6-4 3rd set to tie the team score. Jerod, 1S, finished, just as the sun was setting, to give us the 3-2 win. We are now 4-1 in the CIC and 8-6-1 overall.
The JV Team tied 3-3. Dalton won at singles while Seth/Greg and Greg/Clayton won at doubles.
On Saturday, we defeated Kankakee Valley 5-0 in the first round of the Lebanon Invite. In the finals, we lost to Lebanon 4-1. It was a good day for us…overall, we showed much fight in both matches. Jerod won both of his matches.
The JV Team also split their matches. Clayton, Matthias, and Greg won singles matches and Breyton/Seth won a doubles match.
On Monday, we played Muncie Burris on the Ball State University Courts for the last regular season match of the season. The singles players (Jerod, Isaac, and Paxton) helped secure the team victory in a fairly quick fashion. The doubles teams kept fighting to the finish. Both doubles teams lost the first set. It took a tie-breaker for Burris to win the #1 Doubles spot. Brandon and Conner won the second set to force a super tie-break for the #2Doubles match. They won the tie-break 10-5 to make the final tally 4-1 in favor of the Indians. Mississinewa now has a record of 11-7-1.
The JV Team won 4-1. Winners were: Dalton, Seth, Matthias, and Clayton.
Even though the final outcome was the same as earlier in the season with the Marion match, the level of play and the competitiveness was greatly improved. It took over 2 hours before Marion secured the 3rd team point to seal the victory. Paxton Sample won at 3 singles for the Indians. Jerod May pushed All-State player, Tejas Srikanth, to a 2nd set tie-break. Brandon Herring/Conner Stark won the second set to extend play at the #2 Doubles position. The match was highly entertaining. The Indians put a scare into the Giants.
We finish the season with an overall record of 11-8-1. Also, we finished in second place in the CIC.
